PŘEDNÁŠKA "Gait and cognition"

Dept. of Neurology and Center of Clinical Neuroscience, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague

Upright posture and bipedal gait is an exclusively human movement stereotype, which is connected with the development of thought, speech and fine motor coordination of the upper limbs.

Gait is characteristically impaired when the brain is affected by various pathological processes. Disturbances of the upright posture and gait control systems is a particularly important source of falls, injuries, and other health complications in old age. Falls are one of the main factors of mortality in the elderly, especially when combined with impairment of cognitive function.

The aim of my contribution will be to show the basic phenotypes of gait disorders, to discuss their mechanisms and especially to emphasize the relationship of disorders of gait and stability with cognitive function.
