Lecture "Pharmacogenetic aspects of bipolar disorder"

Prof. Martin Alda, Dalhousie University, Canada

Bipolar disorder is one of the most devastating and costly medical conditions with an enormous risk of suicide. Recurrent episodes of mania, depression and psychosis require long-term preventive treatment. The choice of the suitable medication has been traditionally based on a trial-and-error approach leading to significant delays to effective stabilization and poor treatment response overall. I will discuss how genomic, neurobiological, and clinical features can aid in clinical decisions that ultimately lead to optimized, personalized treatment
