Jessenius prize is awarded annually as a part of Physician of the Year competition. This award recognizes major contribution in medicine. We are pleased that this year Jesenius prize was awarded to Assoc. Prof. Premysl Jiruska, M.D., Ph.D. from the Department of Developmental Epileptology of Institute of Physiology. The expert committee awarded Dr. Jiruska for his contribution to epilepsy research. In his work, Dr. Jiruska and his colleagues are focusing on the understanding of the mechanisms how epilepsy and seizures develop and how to effectively prevent and treat this severe neurological disorder which affects approximately 75 000 people in the Czech Republic.
